Remember your outrage when Qatar won the right to host the 2022 World Cup instead of the United States? Rev it back up again.
"I hope it will be held in winter," UEFA president Michel Platini said on Tuesday. "We have to go to Qatar when it is good for everybody to participate. What is better for the fans?"
But the promises! Air conditioned stadiums are going to revolutionize the world, remember?
Instead we are looking at a vastly different world soccer calendar and one that doesn't even work with MLS's. Apparently the playoffs and MLS Cup just aren't happening.
"In 10 years we can manage to decide how we can postpone the season for one month," he said. "January is difficult for the World Cup because you have the Winter Olympic Games. If we stop from 2 November to 20 December it means, instead of finishing in May, we stop in June. It is not a big problem. It is for the good of the World Cup, the most important competition in the world."
Of course, Qatar never won the World Cup because it would stage the best tournament and this was inevitable. They won because: 1) you are not a cynic and believe it was time for the Middle East to host the world's biggest tournament. 2) you think FIFA is corrupt and Qatar paid the right people enough money.
The problem with the outrage is that it is tough to argue spreading the game to other parts of the country. And the U.S. should have never gotten into the bidding if they weren't willing to play the game, which is giving certain people gifts. It's not as if FIFA is discrete about how the game is played.
That is a story for another day or another year; one that passed long ago. Qatar is hosting the World Cup. The question now is when.
