Joey Gyau has emerged as one of the more promising players in the United States player pool, but that may be in doubt suddenly. The 22-year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder left Friday's friendly with Ecuador with an apparent left knee injury. Gyau was immediately subbed off for Bobby Wood and was seen leaving the playing field on crutches.
The injury was of the non-contact variety as Gyau tried to make a cut and his leg simply gave out.
Gyau had only recently made his senior team debut with Dortmund, coming into a match on Sept. 24. He had also just started his senior USMNT career, picking up his second career start. His first start came on Sept. 3 in a friendly against Czech Republic.
Prior to last month, Gyau had been playing mostly in the lower divisions of German football, first with Hoffenheim II and more recently with Dortmund II. He had also been a regular contributor on U.S. youth national teams.
