U.S. Soccer put the USWNT qualifying squad up on their website, then took it down. Whoops! They've previously said the team would be released on Monday, but someone hit a button a tad early.
A whopping 28 players got a look over the last two friendlies, so Jill Ellis obviously had to cut down her selections considerably. The prematurely released squad featured 20 makes, and it's pretty heavy on the forwards, so Ellis could be looking at one of them as a potential winger. And Morgan Brian might be the most defensive midfielder in this team, so she's not too concerned about the quality of opposition the USWNT will come up against in CONCACAF qualifying.
Here's the leaked squad.
Goalkeepers: Ashlyn Harris, Hope Solo.
Defenders: Crystal Dunn, Whitney Engen, Meghan Klingenberg, Ali Krieger, Kelley O'Hara, Christie Rampone, Becky Sauerbrunn.
Midfielders: Morgan Brian, Tobin Heath, Lauren Holiday, Carli Lloyd, Heather O'Reilly, Megan Rapinoe.
Forwards: Sydney Leroux, Alex Morgan, Christen Press, Amy Rodriguez, Abby Wambach
Veterans Shannon Boxx, Stephanie Cox and Rachel Van Hollebeke, who have been given recent looks, apparently didn't make the cut. Also left off are younger up and coming players Kristie Mewis and Julie Johnston. Clearly things can change between now and a real announcement, but it wouldn't be surprising if this ended up being the real team.
