Jurgen Klinsmann sends MLS Cup Playoff participants home as expected

Steve Flynn-USA TODAY Sports

As most anticipated, the United States men's national team have sent home all of the players who are still active in the MLS Cup Playoffs. DeAndre Yedlin has been released back to the Seattle Sounders, while Jermaine Jones and Lee Nguyen will go back to the New England Revolution. Klinsmann also released DaMarcus Beasley back to the Houston Dynamo.

Unlike the previous set of friendlies, Klinsmann has not sent Brad Guzan back to Aston Villa after giving him a start in the first of two matches. On that occasion, Klinsmann announced before the friendlies that Nick Rimando would start in the second game.

Because those players start in four different positions, the USMNT isn't particularly thin anywhere. While three are defenders, there are five true defenders, plus Fabian Johnson remaining in the squad. Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron will be in contention to replace Jones in the starting XI, while Timothy Chandler or Johnson will take Yedlin's spot at right back.
