While resting comfortably in front of their TV's on Wednesday night, the United States men's national team learned who their opponent for the 2015 Gold Cup quarterfinals would be. Despite getting hammered in their first two group games, Cuba defeated Guatemala to book their unlikely trip to Baltimore to face the USMNT.
Much like every Gold Cup, the Cuban national team have had to deal with their share of turmoil in having three of their players defect. Compounding matters further, they got smashed, 6-0, by Mexico in their opening game. Trinidad and Tobago followed that up with a 2-0 victory, leaving Cuba in dire straights.
Things looked bleak for the Cubans' progression chances. Thanks to poor results in other groups, their 1-0 win over Guatemala in the final group game miraculously pushed them into the Gold Cup quarterfinals. Maikel Reyes' 73rd minute goal, Cuba's first of the tournament, was enough to win his side a trip to the quarters despite having a -7 goal differential.
The U.S. will play Cuba on Saturday at 5pm at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD.
