Liverpool have been one of the surprises of the early Premier League season, sitting second in the table currently. However, an injury to one of their biggest stars is expected to reignite their interest in the United States’ hottest property.

A report out of England states that a long-term injury to Philippe Coutinho sustained this past weekend could lead to the Reds ramping up their efforts to pry USMNT star Christian Pulisic away from Borussia Dortmund. They will also be without the service of another one of their main attacking threats with Sadio Mane missing most of January away at the African Cup of Nations.

It’s no secret that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has an affinity for the 18-year-old phenom. Pulisic was signed to the Bundesliga giants while the German was at the helm before departing in 2015. Rumors about Liverpool’s interest in Pulisic have been rampant since the summer and could very well get even louder as the winter transfer window approaches.

Liverpool’s interest isn’t in question here, it’s Dortmund’s willingness to allow Pulisic to leave. At 18, the U.S. Soccer attacker has a tremendous amount of transfer value having not even sniffed his peak years. They would be well within their wits to keep a hold of him for a few more years to continue his develop and hopefully let his value increase tenfold for an even bigger profit down the road.

Reports say it could cost Liverpool nearly $31 million to get Pulisic right now which would smash the American transfer record that Jozy Altidore set with his $10 million move from the Red Bulls to Villarreal in 2009.
