United States men's national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann has decided to make a late addition to his squad set to face Ecuador in Wednesday night's Copa America Centenario tune-up, calling up 20-year old FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta.
Acosta has had a benchmark year with the U.S., breaking through to the senior team after being a prominent figure in the youth setup at multiple levels. As a member of the initial 40-man preliminary Copa America Centenario squad, the future certainly looks bright for Acosta.
Despite playing almost exclusively as a defensive midfielder for FC Dallas, US Soccer's press release refers to Acosta as a defender, most likely at either fullback spot. With the glaring weakness at left back in the talent pool, Klinsmann may see Acosta, a versatile left-footed player, as a future option at left back.
The friendly against fellow Copa America Centenario participant Ecuador will be shown Wednesday night at 7PM CT on ESPN2, live from Frisco, Texas.
