U.S. youth international Zack Steffen is moving up in the world. The 21-year-old is set to serve as SC Freiburg's third string goalkeeper for the 2016-17 season according to Kicker.

The club are fresh off of winning the 2. Bundesliga and gaining promotion to the top flight. Steffen will be replacing Konstantin Fuhry on the depth chart after his move to SV Elversberg in the Regionalliga.

The Maryland native appeared 14 times for the club's U-23 team last season and appears to be impressing enough to earn a spot with the first team.

Steffen has always been one of the more exciting American prospects. His heroic performance for the U.S. U-20 team in the 2015 World Cup helped lead them to a quarterfinal finish. He's now just an injury or two away from getting Bundesliga minutes. With the current USMNT goalkeeper spot on loose ground, there's no telling what a few appearances for the youngster next season could do for his national team chances.

We're still a long ways from that scenario, but it's good to see Steffen get put in the position to have that chance for his club.
