Here's something I learned: Nielsen is known for collecting data for both TV and radio, but I had no idea that they ranked TV on twitter. I figured there had to be something, but hey you learn something new everyday.
Here's how they consider and collect the data.
Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings Daily Top Five lists are ranked by Tweets and include two metrics for each of the top Series and Specials episodes or Sports Events.
Tweets – Tweets ascribed to a linear TV episode.
Unique Authors – Unique Twitter accounts that have sent at least one Tweet ascribed to a specific TV episode.
Last night's win against Los Ticos was the highest rated sports event on Twitter. My twitter feed was filled with game tweets. I wasn't the only one, according to the data provided by Nielsen.

So, 160,000 tweets from 68,000 unique authors. That's a lot of tweets, Now let's compare it to last night - with regular TV. Yes, amazingly enough there were other things going on besides a mugging of Costa Rica.

So if I'm reading this correctly, USA vs Costa Rica (160,000) brought in close to the same amount of tweets about The Bachelorette (185,000). Seriously? The Bachelorette is a pretty big deal in terms of pop culture - this is a sign the MNT is approaching a certain level in the cultural consciousness. While this is just one piece of the ratings pie, it's a pretty big one.
