FOX Sports have announced that Tuesday night's USA vs. Costa Rica Copa America Centenario group match, which the Americans won going away, was Fox Sports 1's most watched men's soccer match in their history.
According to Nielsen, the match averaged 1.6 million viewers on the night, surpassing last fall's CONCACAF Cup between bitter rivals USA and Mexico (1.561 million viewers) as the top men's match ever watched on Fox Sports 1.
The USA's first group match against Colombia came up just short of breaking the record. Considering the weekday match and fans having to work the next day, it's logical to assume a lot more people had to stay home to watch instead of going to watch parties and such. That could account for the bump in viewership.
It will be very interesting to see the numbers for their final group match against Paraguay. Optimism has been given a shot in the arm with the 4-0 win. The USA's tournament lives will hang in the balance. Could it possible break the record again? It would be pretty cool if it did.
While ticket sales may not be what organizers had hoped for, it's clear that interest in the Copa America Centenario is there from a broader perspective.
