USA U-19s crash out of 2016 COTIF Tournament

Slow start, slow finish.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The United States under-19 men's national team finished in fourth place in Group A of the 2016 COTIF Tournament.

The squad, led by head coach Brad Friedel, dropped its first match to Venezuela, 2-0.

They rebounded in their second match, beating Mauritania, 1-0, on the strength of a goal from Djordje Mihailovic.

Club Tijuana's Brandon Vazquez scored the U.S.'s lone goal in 1-0 win over tournament hosts Spain.

The U-19s needed three points in their final group match against Bahrain to advance to the semifinals. The U.S. jumped out to a 1-0 lead via a goal from Kevin Lankford, but Bahrain scored three straight goals to eliminate the Little Yanks/USMNT/Americans.

The match ended with a brawl that will surely generate international headlines:

Six points, three goals, two wins, and one brawl adds up to a team that's going home early. It's a disappointing finish to the tournament, and time will tell if there will be any additional fallout from the brouhaha.
