After a full month of speculation and rumors, Chelsea have announced they have loaned Matt Miazga to Eredivisie club Vitesse on a season-long loan.
via Chelsea’s official website
The 21-year-old American defender joined Chelsea in January from New York Red Bulls in his homeland and made two appearances last term, in successive games at Aston Villa and Swansea.
He was a member of the squad which travelled to Austria and the US for pre-season and now continues his development in the Dutch Eredivisie with Vitesse.
This is the least shocking move in the history of sports considering that Vitesse is a well-known breeding ground for Chelsea loanees. They current have two of their young forwards, Lewis Baker and Nathan, on loan there.
Miazga had been linked to a loan move earlier in the day to La Liga side Espanyol, but they ended up signing Mexican international Diego Reyes from FC Porto.
This is a rather uninspiring move for Miazga, in all honesty. It seems like it was a last resort move just to get him out of the club and into a possible situation for playing time. Which is unfortunate for the 21-year-old, who would’ve been much better off in a more competitive league.
The Eredivisie is an okay league to develop attacking players, but it has a reputation for being a mess defensively. Hopefully that narrative is overblown and he continues his development there this season.
