Tonight the United States men’s national team look to formally book their ticket to "The Hex" — CONCACAF’s six-nation final round of World Cup qualifying. Standing in their way is a match against Group 3 leaders, Trinidad & Tobago.
The U.S. are all but guaranteed to a spot in the Hex after demolishing St. Vincent & the Grenadines last week. It would take a true miracle for Guatemala to overcome a 12-goal goal differential and the Americans to lose to T&T.
It’ll be very interesting to see how Jurgen Klinsmann is planning to go about this match in terms of his lineup selection. Prior to the Vincy Heat match, he claimed he would give the young players a chance if qualification is clinched. While they aren’t mathematically in yet, it’s all but certain. Will Klinsmann give some new players a chance anyways? Or will he play it extremely cautious and go with the normal lineup?
The other storyline to keep an eye on is whether or not the U.S. can overtake T&T for first in the group. The winner of Group 3 will in all likelihood begin the Hex with a home match against Mexico and an away test against Costa Rica. One of the the toughest starts you could possibly get.
