Edit: This is now official

Liverpool’s American teenager Brooks Lennon looks set to be loaned to Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake according to the Liverpool Echo. Just a year and a half after joining the famous Premier League club from RSL’s Development Academy team, the 19-year-old seems like he’s headed back for a loan through the 2017 season.

While this certainly seems like a weird career move, it should offer him the chance for some playing time in the upcoming MLS season. SB Nation’s RSL Soapbox see Lennon as the main back-up to striker Yura Movsisyan if the move does come off as rumored. There are certainly some talented players at the reserve Premier League level, but playing in MLS for a season could do him some good.

It’s unclear just how far away from getting a first team chance at Liverpool the youngster is. He’s a regular for the club’s under-19 team and plays for the under-21’s on occasion. But, as with every big club, it’s very hard to breakthrough and challenge for the top squad. If Liverpool still think he’s a few years away from really having that chance, then this move makes some sense.
