The Philadelphia Union announced the signing of former United States men’s national team defender Oguchi Onyewu. The towering center back was a member of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup squads.
“Oguchi is a big, physical presence who brings experience and veteran professionalism, important traits that we believe will be an asset for our group of young defenders,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart. “He provides excellent depth at the center back position and we are pleased that we were able to add him to our squad.”
Onyewu previously played with a long list of clubs, including Standard Liege, AC Milan, Sporting CP, and Newcastle. He was last on the books with Charlton Athletic during the 2014-2015 season, making three appearances.
The 34-year old center back earned 69 caps with the national team and scored six goals. A return to the program for the 2018 World Cup is probably out of the question, but stranger things have happened.
