We reported back in March that American right-back Desevio Payne was leaving Eredivisie side Groningen because his deal wasn’t renewed and was free to leave the club. The 21-year-old South Carolina native’s career was up in the air. Would he head back to the US for a job in the MLS, England or 2. Bundesliga?

Well. according to Brian Sciaretta he’s staying in the Dutch first division.

Excelsior finished in the 12th place this season in the Dutch top flight. Payne this season at FC Groningen scored 1 goal in 14 appearances across all competitions. He’s eligible to represent the United States, Trinidad and Tobago and the Netherlands.

He most recently suited up for the United States in the U-20 World Cup in 2015. His technical ability and presence at right back helped them advance as far as they did. It’ll will be interesting to see what Excelsior has in store for the young American.
