It. Is. Time. For United States supporters, this is what it’s all about. Outside of the World Cup, there’s no bigger date on the U.S. Soccer calendar than when the USA play Mexico, especially in a World Cup qualifier. These two teams met back in November with El Tri pulling out a dramatic win in Columbus.
Perhaps the U.S. are coming into Estadio Azteca at the perfect time. Mexico are preparing for the 2017 Confederations Cup and have a pretty big lead (5 point cushion) at the top of the Hex standings. While that doesn’t mean they’ll take it easy, it does mean they aren’t under a ton of pressure to get three points against the USA.
For the U.S., they are undoubtedly underdogs as they always are in this fixture every four years. Last cycle, they gritted out a 0-0 result. More of the same would be welcome as a point would be vital. However, how realistic is it to expect another scoreless draw? With the attacking firepower that Mexico have, there are bound to be goals scored in this one.
If we’re being honest here, the U.S. really have nothing to lose. Not many are giving them much of a chance to get anything out of this game. History proves those people right. Why not go for glory? Will someone rise to the occasion and become a hero or will the USMNT roll over for their bitter rivals and let them walk into Russia on a high note? We’re about to find out.
