Soccer: Gold Cup-Third Place Match-USA at Panama Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The United States men’s national team rebounded from an 0-2 start in the CONCACAF Hexagonal with a comprehensive six-goal victory over Honduras on Friday night. While the tides seem to have suddenly changed on the USA’s World Cup hopes, the job’s only just beginning. The next test will tell us a lot about just where this team stands heading into the summer.

After the 6-0 romp in San Jose, the U.S. now take their talents down south to Panama City and an away qualifying date with Los Canaleros. As is always the case in CONCACAF, away matches are a different animal. You know the story by now. Conditions aren’t ideal, crowds are hostile, and officiating can sometimes be against you. Nevertheless, the U.S. will be confident of picking up points after a scintillating performance just four days ago.

Injuries to important players will leave Bruce Arena with some lineup questions to answer. However, the return of Jermaine Jones from suspension will help soften the blow of their departures a little bit. Meanwhile, Panama are coming off a disappointing loss away to Trinidad and Tobago. They still sit above the U.S. in the Hex standings by one point through three matches played. This is an important match for both, so it’ll be interesting to see the mentality each side comes out with. You can bet that Panama will want three points, while I’m sure Arena and the U.S. will want the same.
