Sergiño Dest has signed a contract with AFC Ajax. The deal will keep Dest with the Dutch giants through June of 2021.
Dest is an 18-year-old Dutch-American dual national who played for the United States at the 2017 U-17 World Cup and also featured with the U-20 team that recently won the Concacaf Championship. He has been in Ajax’s famous academy since 2012 and slowly worked his way through the ranks.
Dest is a very versatile player. He’s usually deployed as a right back, but he is capable of playing as a left back and in the attack on either wing. He has outstanding ability to beat defenders on the dribble and is a quality passer. Dest’s stock has risen perhaps faster than any other US prospect over the last year. He has recently moved up from the U-19’s to Ajax’s B team, Jong Ajax, who play in the second division in the Netherlands. He’s already made five appearances and scored a goal as well.
Dest said that he hopes to become a regular for Jong Ajax and make his first team debut this season. That will be no easy task, but he is one to keep a close eye on as his career takes shape.
