Another young American player could be on their way to Benfica if rumors are to be believed.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Primeira Liga giants are interested in signing D.C. United homegrown player and former U.S. U-17 international Chris Durkin.
Durkin just turned 18 this month and will be eligible to sign in Europe when the next transfer window opens in the summer. According to the report, Benfica want to bring him in to play for their reserve team that already features another American in Keaton Parks.
D.C. United signed the Virginia native to a Homegrown contract in the middle of 2016 but he has yet to appear in an MLS match for the club. He’s spent a considerable amount of time on loan to the team’s USL affiliate, the Richmond Kickers, in his short career.
Durkin has been capped 14 times by the U.S. U-17 team, including during this past year’s World Cup in India.
