Well it has all come to this, the most important game at the World Cup, the third place match. It would be easy to write this game off as a cash grab for FIFA that has no consequence in the real world of soccer and exists just to put another thing on TV for the organization to sell advertising space and broadcasting rights to.
There’s no “but” after that, it’s just an observation that is as obvious as it is true.
In some ways, the match exists as an alternative reality to what seems like a World Cup final that is destined to be like so many others - cautious, defensive, turgid - borderline unwatchable. Belgium and England have been two of the more enjoyable teams to watch in the tournament and have given viewers some of the best moments in this World Cup. They probably deserve better than being relegated to playing in a glorified friendly, but perhaps they can show us some of the fun and joy they played with throughout the tournament.
