Aside from being an obscure reference to a joke from an early 2000s Ali G interview with David and Victoria Beckham, Scunthorpe United is a soccer team in the English 3rd Division - one that Columbus, Georgia native Duane Holmes currently plays for. That may be changing though, reports indicate that Holmes may be on the move to either Derby County, currently managed by Frank Lampard, or Rotherham United in the Championship.
Holmes is an attacking midfielder usually played on the left wing or even as a central attacking mid. The 23 year-old moved came up through the Huddersfield youth system but moved onto Scunthrope in 2016. Since then he has earned a starting spot with the Iron. Holmes may be thought of as a long-shot as far as potential players in the USMNT pool, but a move to a more challenging league with a chance to prove himself at a higher level could get him noticed by American Manager Dave Sarachan or his replacement in the future.
Scunthrope nearly won promotion to the Championship but were thwarted in the League One semi-final by Rotherham who did win promotion last season.
