The United States men’s national team opened its inaugural CONCACAF Nations League campaign with a 7-0 win over Cuba Friday night. Weston McKennie and Jordan Morris led the way, creating four goals in the first 13 minutes of the rout. Now, Gregg Berhalter’s squad travels to Toronto to take on Canada in the first of two matches that will likely decide which country advances to the competition’s semifinals. Four points should all but clinch a spot in the next round, but it won’t be an easy task.
Parts of the starting lineup have already been revealed. In his pre-match press conference, Berhalter announced that Zack Steffen will start at goalkeeper. He was reportedly training separately last week and did not feature against Cuba. Additionally, Josh Sargent may not dress due to an ankle injury. The Werder Bremen striker played 90 minutes against Cuba and scored a goal.
As often as this refrain has been repeated, it might finally be true: this is a very talented Canadian squad that should qualify for the World Cup. Despite a disappointing loss in this past summer’s Gold Cup quarterfinals to Haiti, there is plenty of optimism surrounding John Herdmen’s side. The attack features talented players such as Lucas Cavallini (Puebla), Jonathan David (Gent), and Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich); the back line is unseasoned, but veteran Milan Borjan (Red Star Belgrade) continues to quietly be one of the better goalkeepers in CONCACAF.
