The United States Under-20 Men’s National Team begin their World Cup with a Group D match-up against Ukraine today. Tab Ramos’ talented bunch of youngsters have been highly rated throughout this cycle. Some of this group proved why at last year’s Concacaf Championship when they won the whole tournament.
The Golden Ball winner of that tournament was Alex Mendez. The 18-year-old midfielder went on to win the federation’s Young Player of the Year award and to sign a professional contract with Bundesliga club Freiburg. He’ll be expected to play a huge role in the USA’s World Cup efforts.
Mendez isn’t the only star on the team. There are plenty of players who’ve been receiving plaudits the last year or so. This is the time to see if they’ll put it all together on the biggest stage for youth players in the world.
Let the hype begin.
