According to Newcastle-based site Chronicle Live, United States Men’s National Team defender DeAndre Yedlin has undergone surgery related to a groin injury. Yedlin has not featured for Newcastle since a disappointing performance in a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on April 6th. He has made 29 appearances this season for Newcastle, proving to be vital in helping the club avoid relegation.

Newcastle currently sits 14th in the Premier League table and has the 8th-best defensive record with one match left to play. Newcastle faces Fulham in its final Premier League match of the season on Sunday. The Magpies cannot finish the season lower than 15th.

It is unclear how long it will take Yedlin to work his way back to full fitness. He has been in and out of the USMNT lineup under Gregg Berhalter. During the March camp, in which the USMNT played friendlies against Ecuador and Chile, Berhalter stated that he planned to experiment with Yedlin as a winger. Despite this comment, Yedlin played 90 minutes as a right-back against Chile.

The USMNT kick off its 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign against Guyana on June 18th. It’s a race against time for Yedlin to be ready for selection.
