Well then. That was probably the most interesting way the World Cup could’ve started for the United States Women’s National Team. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about their 13-0 win over Thailand generated a ridiculous amount of debate and consternation.
It’s time for Jill Ellis’ side to put that all behind them and focus on the task at hand, clinching a spot in the knockout rounds. A win over Chile today will do that. While Chile is undoubtedly a step up in competition from their first opponent, the U.S. are still massive favorites. Sweden beat them 2-0 in their opening group match and barring something really unfortunate, the Americans should do the same.
Confidence should be as high as possible. It’s important to avoid a letdown, especially with the likely group decider against Sweden coming up after this one. It’s unlikely they’ll ever top their goal output against Thailand, but the performances can surely get better as the tournament progresses.
