Group B at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup ends on a decidedly anti-climactic note, with advancement already decided. Costa Rica and Haiti clinched a spot in the knockout stage, with six points apiece. Bermuda and Nicaragua were unable to secure a single point from their first two matches. However, there is plenty to play for in the latter fixture, with Group B’s first place finisher avoiding Mexico in the quarterfinals (but in all likelihood running into the regional giant in the semifinal).
The final day of Group B opens at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey with Bermuda and Nicaragua playing for pride. The Gombey Warriors have looked lively during their first Gold Cup, scoring in both matches and should be favored to take home three points. Nicaragua has been out of sorts and goalless; perhaps La Azul y Blanco would be best served by deploying a younger side and giving the players experience.
Costa Rica has lived up to its billing as one of the best teams in CONCACAF, easing through its first two matches. Haiti has displayed a dynamic attack, with mountainous striker Frantzdy Pierrot making his mark as one of the confederation’s best attackers. Costa Rica won the last meeting between this two sides in 2016, and this match should be an exciting viewing experience for the casual observer.
