After possibly the most comfortable group stage the United States has ever encountered at the Women’s World Cup, the true drama begins. The Round of 16 is upon us and Spain is the first foe looking to shock the champs and end their bid for a repeat.
The Americans have never failed to get as far as at least the third-place game. Crashing out in the Round of 16 would almost be unthinkable for Jill Ellis’ side. It’s easy to say that, but as always, the games must be played and the results must be obtained.
The U.S. have been pretty much perfect so far. Three wins in three tries, 18 goals scored, none conceded. Can they continue to roll through the competition like it’s nothing or will they finally meet some resistance today? Let the drama of the knockout rounds begin.
