The final day of group play at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup wraps with one match determining quarterfinal positioning and the other having no bearing on the competition. Guyana takes on Trinidad and Tobago in the first fixture at Kansas City, Kansas’ Children’s Mercy Park. The nightcap features the host United States facing off against a strong Panama side.
Trinidad’s Gold Cup campaign has been dreadful, with an opening 2-0 loss to Panama and a 6-0 demolishing by the USMNT. Manager Dennis Lawrence believes his team needs to change its mentality and “learn how to stand up and fight.” The Soca Warriors play a beatable Guyana side, but will need more than just a good result heading into next fall’s Nations League. As for the Golden Jaguars, their first Gold Cup has arguably been a success, as they haven’t appeared overwhelmed or outclassed.
Panama and the United States have eased through the group stage and will likely meet again in the semifinal round. Los Canaleros entered the tournament on a massive losing streak that began prior to the 2018 World Cup, but the Central American nation tends to perform strongly at the continental championship (finishing second in 2005 and 2013). Interim manager Julio Dely Valdés indicated that he will rest players for the third match.
