The United States men’s national team takes on Panama in the final match of Group D at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Both sides have qualified for the quarterfinal with six points apiece. The match is at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, a venue at which the USMNT has never lost.

Panamanian manager Julio Dely Valdés indicated that he will rest players for this match. “In this tournament there is a lot of wear and little time to recover,” the interim appointment said following his side’s 4-2 win over Guyana. “We must continue in the same line of giving rest to players.”

Gregg Berhalter opted to make complete changes in the lineup for the third match, with the entire lineup being swapped out. Striker Jozy Altidore gets his first start of the competition. Sean Johnson replaces Zack Steffen at goalkeeper. According to USSoccer.com, Daniel Lovitz and Jonathan Lewis are making their Gold Cup debuts.

This match doesn’t hold too much weight, as both teams advancing from Group D pair off with Group C on their own side of the bracket; the first place finisher will play Curaçao, the second place faces Jamaica. Regardless of who wins, loses, or draws, the USMNT and Panama will not be forced to deal with Costa Rica or Mexico until the final. Perhaps this is merely a prelude to a rematch in the semifinal round.
