Well. Here we are. The two best teams with the best odds of winning the World Cup are set to face-off. Except the United States and France aren’t meeting in the final. The bracket gods have decided to give us the most-anticipated game in the quarterfinals.
Any pre-tournament betting odds had either the United States as the clear favorites to repeat as World Cup champs or hosts France alongside them. Now one of them will be sent home just five matches in. It may seem cruel, but for us fans of the sport, it’s a treat to see such a high profile occasion this early.
Recent history between these two powers hasn’t been kind to the Americans. France has won twice and drawn once in their last three meetings, including a surprisingly dominant 3-1 in January of this year. While France has had the USA’s number recently, Jill Ellis’ side has the pedigree and big match experience.
This may just be a quarterfinal, but it feels like the winner of this one very well could go on to lift the World Cup. It doesn’t get much bigger than this.
