The United States men’s national team has made it to the semifinals of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, unbeaten and without allowing a goal. They’ve earned a date with Jamaica, who has looked less than impressive but enjoyed success at recent Gold Cups. The two teams face off at Nashville, Tennessee’s Nissan Stadium for the privilege of playing a relatively struggling Mexican side in the final.
The USMNT heads into the match on the heels of two underwhelming 1-0 victories. Gregg Berhalter’s squad has teased hints of a bright future, but the disorganized midfield and uneven attack don’t generate confidence. The shutout streak will eventually end, but, for now, the team is relying on do-everything center back Aaron Long to hold things together.
Despite limping through the group stage, Jamaica once again finds itself in the late stages of the Gold Cup. The Reggae Boyz narrowly defeated Panama, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round, with a Darren Mattocks penalty conversion. It will likely take a complete performance to pull off a victory, but this team has the talent to do it. Goalkeeper Andre Blake is capable of standing on his head, Dever Orgill can score in bunches, and Leon Bailey is arguably the most exciting young player in the tournament.
