The United States men’s national team faces off against Jamaica at Nissan Field in Nashville, Tennessee in the semifinals of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. These two teams competed in a friendly prior to the tournament, with the Reggae Boyz notching a 1-0 victory against an opponent decidedly comprised of reserve players. This time the match counts with a spot in the final against Mexico on the line.
There are four alterations since last match, including one key change at striker. Despite being healthy, Jozy Altidore was largely excluded from the starting leading up to this match in favor of Gyasi Zardes. According to manager Gregg Berhalter, the striker has “been ready to play” and is “exactly where [the USMNT] needs him to be.” It appears he needs to be starting in the semifinal.
Reggie Cannon, Matt Miazga, and Jordan Morris are also entering the lineup in place of Nick Lima, Walker Zimmerman, and Tyler Boyd. Tim Ream is the team’s captain. Zack Steffen is in at goalkeeper; the future Manchester City man will attempt to keep the USMNT’s shutout streak alive.
Due to yellow card accumulation, Jamaica is without starting center back Damion Lowe, who received a time wasting caution in the 90th minute of the quarterfinal. He is replaced by Michael Hector, a 6’4” defender who plays for Chelsea and has been lining up in the midfield during this tournament.
