Le Tour de Four enters the victory lap stage for the USWNT. The difficult mountain stages and mad dash sprints are over and won. This should be nothing but a stroll through the lovely French scenery sipping on champagne for the Americans. That’s what logic tells us. The Netherlands won’t be standing for any of that nonsense.
Despite only appearing in their second-ever Women’s World Cup, the Dutch have made it to the final. Yes they are a surprise finalists. Yes they are massive underdogs. But that doesn’t mean this will be easy. The stakes for Jill Ellis’ side are extremely high. Win and you become the first nation to win four titles. The victory parades, the nightly talk show spots, the ESPN car washes, and on and on. That’s what glory brings. Losing is unthinkable. If they don’t get the job done it will be seen as a complete failure and embarrassment at this point. That’s the pressure facing them.
We all know how they got here. Spain taken care of. Hosts and co-favorites France sent packing. England, tea you later. Now it’s the Netherlands sitting in front of them and history. There’s nothing really more to say other than let’s win the damn thing.
