Josh Sargent celebrated his return call-up to the United States men’s national team by notching his first goal of the new Bundesliga season for Werder Bremen. The 19-year-old striker gave his side a 2-1 first half lead against Augsburg with an absolutely brilliant piece of skill.
A ball over the top from the midfield beat the Augsburg back line, Sargent’s first touch is almost a blind, over-the-shoulder one that is good enough to bounce right to his chest. His next deliberate touch chips and rounds the goalkeeper with unbelievable poise. The next is putting the finishing touch on a superb goal. Here’s the clip:

The run, the brilliant first touch, the chip of the keeper. What a goal from the American! pic.twitter.com/x5X9FMhXL4
It’s been a consistently inconsistent run for Sargent at Bremen, getting sporadic chances to play in his first season-plus at the German club. This is his third career goal in the Bundesliga in just his second-ever start.
If there’s any chance of him winning the full-time starting striker spot, amazing efforts like this can only help his cause. When you think about the technique involved, it’s hard to not get extremely excited as a USMNT fan.
