The United States Men’s National Team are starting off 2020 with a friendly against Costa Rica, exactly 364 days after their last meeting in which the Yanks got the 2-0 shutout. Today’s match in Carson, California is the first of three warm-up matches Gregg Berhalter will have to get his team ready for the CONCACAF Nations League Playoffs.
As is always the case with the January camp, the Americans have a lot of youth on the roster and a lot of big opportunities for that youth to seize. The team announced on Friday that Jesús Ferreira had chosen to represent the US and that FIFA had quickly cleared him to play. The 19-year-old is set to get the start this afternoon.
He’ll be facing a Costa Rica team missing some key pieces due to the timing of the match outside outside the international window. The Costa Ricans have just one win in their last seven matches after being eliminated in the Gold Cup by Haiti and struggling in the Nations League.
