UPDATED with official statements from US Soccer.
US Soccer will cancel their March and April friendlies for the men’s and women’s team, it was reported today by Doug McIntyre at Yahoo! Sports. USSF is also canceling the majority of youth national team and extended national team camps planned through April 30.
The senior men’s team was scheduled to play the Netherlands away on March 26 and Wales away on March 30, while the senior women’s team had two home friendlies scheduled, one against Australia on April 10 and against Brazil on April 14. USSF said in their official statement they will attempt to reschedule the WNT’s friendlies at a later date.
There is growing concern over slowing the spread of COVID-19, and with the government announcing it will ban entry to foreign nationals traveling from Europe for the next 30 days, as well as multiple sports leagues suspending their seasons and state governments beginning to restrict large gatherings, it’s the right move.
Concacaf Olympic qualifying for the men is scheduled to begin March 20 in Mexico, but no word yet on whether that will be cancelled - though it seems likely. The U-23 MNT are currently in Guadalajara. “U.S. Soccer is keeping in constant communication with Concacaf officials about the status of the competition,” was the federation’s official statement on the matter as of this writing.
The USA-Australia cancellation could impact the agreement between the two federations for Australia to reciprocally host the US for two games in November 2021. Obviously the primary concern here is keeping everyone safe and healthy and logistics can come later. For now, please remember to wash your hands, limit contact, and try to stay home if you feel ill.
