Who is on the field when we score (or don't)

There is a lot of subjective ink spilled over who should start/play for the national team, so I wanted to bring some data to the conversation. The methodology is simple. What players are on the field when we score (+1) and what players are on the field when our opponents score (-1)? Then I take the net scores for each player and normalize to 90 minutes. (data from transfermarkt.com)

For the first qualifying window, these are the results:

Min Played Net Net/90min
Cristian Roldán 74 3 3.65
Mark McKenzie 99 3 2.73
Ricardo Pepi 99 3 2.73
Sebastian Lletget 156 4 2.31
Antonee Robinson 187 4 1.93
DeAndre Yedlin 160 3 1.69
Brenden Aaronson 214 4 1.68
Matt Turner 297 3 0.91
Miles Robinson 297 3 0.91
Tyler Adams 297 3 0.91
Christian Pulisic 161 0 0.00
Kellyn Acosta 133 0 0.00
Sergiño Dest 108 0 0.00
Weston McKennie 99 0 0.00
James Sands 73 0 0.00
Siebatcheu 118 0 0.00
Konrad de la Fuente 81 0 0.00
Gio Reyna 99 0 0.00
Ream 99 0 0.00
John Anthony Brooks 145 -1 -0.62
Josh Sargent 126 -1 -0.71
George Bello 46 -1 -1.96

Now, of course this was only a three game window and who was on the field for the 2nd half with Honduras really skews the results (perhaps deservedly), but it is worth a look at a few more games. So, here is the same analysis from the Gold Cup.

Min Played Net Net/90min
Zimmerman 193 6 2.80
Roldan 258 8 2.79
Bello 164 5 2.74
Williamson 207 5 2.17
Gioacchini 178 4 2.02
Busio 415 8 1.73
Yueill 106 2 1.70
Moore 403 7 1.56
Zardes 406 7 1.55
Sands 548 9 1.48
Lewis 62 1 1.45
M Robinson 624 10 1.44
Turner 624 10 1.44
Hoppe 368 5 1.22
Acosta 542 7 1.16
Dike 330 4 1.09
Vines 460 5 0.98
Pines 104 1 0.87
Lletget 462 4 0.78
Cannon 157 1 0.57
Arriola 245 1 0.37
Kessler 8 0 0.00

"But the game against Martinique shouldn't count!" I hear you cry. I disagree, but to make you happy, here is the data from the Gold Cup without the Martinique game.

Min Played Net Net/90min
Roldan 159 3 1.70
Zimmerman 114 2 1.58
Lewis 62 1 1.45
Gioacchini 137 2 1.31
Zardes 375 5 1.20
Yueill 86 1 1.05
Moore 345 4 1.04
Vines 460 5 0.98
Acosta 501 5 0.90
M Robinson 525 5 0.86
Turner 525 5 0.86
Busio 316 3 0.85
Sands 449 4 0.80
Lletget 462 4 0.78
Williamson 128 1 0.70
Hoppe 310 2 0.58
Cannon 157 1 0.57
Arriola 245 1 0.37
Dike 262 1 0.34
Bello 65 0 0.00
Pines 84 0 0.00
Kessler 8 0 0.00

If these results continue, it may be worth looking less at who "looked good" on the pitch and instead focus who is helping the team get the results we want.
