The United States Women’s National Team begin their Olympic journey this morning when they take on Sweden in the Group G opener. The USWNT are in search of their 5th gold medal and to become the first team to win the Olympic gold medal immediately after winning the Women’s World Cup. Sweden hope to show that they can be a team that can stand right with the United States and beat them.
While the teams last faced each other in April, a 1-1 draw in Stockholm, and before that in Le Havre during the 2019 World Cup group stage (a 2-0 USWNT victory), most will look back to the 2016 Olympic quarterfinals in Rio. There, Sweden upset the USWNT in penalties, taking that momentum all the way to a silver medal.
Will the USWNT send a message to the rest of the field that they’re ready to dominate? Or, will that message be written in Swedish? It’s an epic start to the Olympic women’s football tournament.
