Pulisic, Reyna kick off new club season with goals

The USMNT’s two biggest stars got off on the right foot.

If the USMNT is experiencing a Golden Generation currently there’s no debate that the two most Golden of the lot are Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna. The pipeline from the American youth system to the Borussia Dortmund first team is alive and well as the two most successful products of it began the 2021-22 season on Saturday with a goal each.

Pulisic began his third full season with Chelsea in style, earning the start and finishing off his side’s second goal of the match against his favorite Premier League victim, Crystal Palace. This is his fifth goal in five appearances against Palace. His well-timed run into the box put him in perfect position to clean-up a rebound off the opposing goalkeeper. His follow-up shot bounced in off the crossbar.

Reyna’s goal was a ‘right place in the right time’ type of tally as well. His positioning at the far post put him right in the path of an Erling Haaland flail at goal that he will inevitably claim was a perfect pass. Who can really argue with him with the numbers he’s putting up?

No matter how the ball ended up at his feet, Gio made no mistake and got his season off to a great start. With Jadon Sancho off to Manchester it’s setting up to be quite the opportunity for Reyna to stake his claim as one of the biggest stars in Germany.

Dortmund and Chelsea would each go on to comfortable wins to start their domestic campaigns.

Here’s to hoping both USMNT golden boys keep up their scoring exploits as World Cup qualifying rapidly approaches.
