September 2021 International Friendly: USA 8-0 Paraguay - Pasta, chili, and goals

A hatty for Alex Morgan and three assists for Rose Lavelle as the USWNT once again dominates

Soccer: USWNT International Friendly Match-Paraguay at USA Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday night in Cincinnati, the USWNT looked to follow up their 9-0 win in Cleveland with another goal celebration to wrap up their tour of Ohio. That’s pretty much what happened.

A fairly heavily rotated squad took the field for Vlatko Andonovski with Sophia Smith making her first start and Carli Lloyd watching from the bench to start things off.

Paraguay lined up nominally in a 4-1-4-1, but as on Thursday would have all hands on deck trying to contain the USWNT attack.

In the end it was another goal bonanza as the USWNT took care of business against an out-matched team and won 8-0. In the last two games since the Olympics, the USWNT has out scored their opponents 17-0 and is averaging 8.5 goals a game. It’s clear that between now and the next World Cup they’ll win every game 8.5-0 and go undefeated. What are people worried about?

OK, look the USWNT scored a lot of goals again

They started early as Rose Lavelle found the net in her home city in the 4th minute.

First start, first goal, not bad from Sophia Smith in the 6th minute.

Paraguay has shown that if they have one weakness, it’s defense. Alex Morgan took advantage in the 8th minute.

If there’s one thing the USWNT can do, it’s punish teams for giving them second chances in the box. Yet again, Alex Morgan found the goal this time smashing home a shot on the volley.

The fifth goal came in the 15th minute as rising star Catarina Macario popped the ball into the net.

The ball ran out of goals after the 15th minute though as the teams would go a full 30 minutes without a score as both teams went into the half.

It felt like agony, but the team finally scored in the second half a full eight minutes after it began. For a third time, Alex Morgan did the damage.

Four subs would come on in the 61st minute when Carli Lloyd, Kelley O’Hara, Becky Sauerbrunn and Lynn Williams would come on for Alex Morgan, Mallory Pugh, Casey Krueger, and Tierna Davidson.

It looked like Kelley O’Hara had scored a goal upon coming on, but she was ruled offside.

After notching three assists Lavelle came off in the 70th minute for Kristie Mewis and Smith made way for Tobin Heath.

In the 79th minute it would be, who else, but Carli Lloyd to find the net as she scooted a close range shot into the net to make it 7-0.

An 8th goal would come as Macario got her second of the game.

A Paraguay player went down around the 83rd minute and there was a delay as she was carted off of the field in what looked to be a serious issue late in the game. After a long delay the game would re-start in the 88th minute and wrap up after two minutes of injury time.
