The United States men’s national team pulled off an unlikely 4-1 away win in Honduras for their first victory in this World Cup qualifying cycle. After a horrendous first half that saw them down 1-0 with very little hope of creating anything, major halftime changes flipped the match on its head.

Ricardo Pepi will garner the majority of the headlines on his USMNT debut after scoring the winning goal. The teenage Mexican-American started and made a huge impact in the second half. Not only did he rise up with a perfect header for the winning goal, he played a huge role in setting up the insurance tally by Brenden Aaronson to secure the three points.

It’s an absolutely massive result for the USMNT and one that was certainly not expected considering all of the circumstances surrounding the team with the mounting injury crisis — which now includes Christian Pulisic after he picked up a knock — and general poor form of the squad. The team can now use this result to build some much-needed momentum heading into three more crucial matches in October.
