Well, we made it. The United States men’s national team squeaked into the Group B lead at the 11th hour and won it. Their prize? Getting to avoid fellow CONCACAF power Costa Rica in the quarterfinal and instead matching up against El Salvador.

Bruce Arena has called in five important reinforcements for the knockout stages. Tim Howard will undoubtedly be handed the starting goalkeeper job with Bill Hamid sent back to the bench alongside the sixth addition, Jesse Gonzalez. The other four new arrivals will most certainly be inserted into the starting lineup as well. Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe are here to give the U.S. the best chance of lifting the Gold Cup once again. Will they be enough to help turn the tide that was a rather tame group stage?

Tonight’s opponents finished third in their group with four points and a neutral goal differential. History is on the Americans side as they have dominated El Salvador in their lifetime series (16-1-5) and have never lost to them on home soil (13-0-2).
