With the announcement of the United States men’s national team roster by Gregg Berhalter yesterday for friendlies this month against Ecuador and Chile, fans began to see how the new coach is rating many of the players in the American pool. With this being the only international window before this summer’s Gold Cup, Berhalter has an opportunity to evaluate some of the European-based players alongside some of the MLS-based players he has seen during January Camp.
However, this window means there’s not enough time for a full evaluation in advance of the Gold Cup’s June start. Add to that players that may be out due to injury or their call-up to youth teams and it’s hard to gauge which direction Berhalter could go when he names the Gold Cup roster.
So, you become the coach for the day. If you had to announce the Gold Cup roster today, and assume everyone in the pool is healthy and available for selection, who makes your 23-man roster? You have to have 3 goalkeepers, but you can do any other combination of players you want to make your roster. Since Gold Cup allows for some call-ins after the group stage, you can even list up to 6 players you would name to the roster at that point. However, if you go that route, you should also mention which guys those 6 additions would replace on the 23-man roster.
So go forth, hit the comments, and let us know who you would have on your 23-man roster at this point for the start of the Gold Cup, and why they’re your roster that can take on all of CONCACAF.
