The quarterfinals of the 2019 Gold Cup begin tonight, and it features two matchups that were not quite expected at this stage. In the first match, Canada, who performed well in the group stage, will take on surprise Group B winners Haiti, who beat Costa Rica in their last match to set up this match. Canada is looking to book its first trip to the semifinals since 2007, while Haiti will seek its first Gold Cup semifinal.
In the late night match, Mexico will battle Costa Rica in a match that was expected to take place in the semifinals. Thanks to Costa Rica’s loss to Haiti, they finished 2nd in Group B and makes this anticipated match a quarterfinal instead. Mexico has appeared to be every bit the tournament favorites they were labeled, and they hope to get past a team that many would label the other contender on this side of the bracket. Standing in their way is the Ticos, who hope to knock off the favorites and show that their loss to Haiti was an aberration. Which teams will book their trip to the semifinals?
