Mix Diskerud could join NYCFC, according to report

Mix Diskerud is a free agent in the winter. Could NYCFC be his landing spot?

Is it time for Mix Diskerud to make the move to MLS? If he does, it could be to New York City FC.

The expansion club, which will begin play next season, is interested in signing Mix, according to Kristian Dyer. Mix is out of contract with Rosenborg after the season and because the Norway Tippeligaen season runs from March until November, a move to MLS would fit. He could leave Rosenborg after the season and join NYCFC in time for the start of their first season without a missing a beat.

This isn't the first time Mix has been linked to a MLS move. Prior to the 2013 season, Mix and the Timbers were talking about a deal. How close they came depends on who you believe, with everything short of signing the contract and never really that close reported. Some blame the Timbers and most blamed the league for the deal not happening, but regardless of the culprit, it didn't come to be and he returned to Rosenborg.

After the saga, Mix said that the league's single-entity system was particularly attractive to players, himself included, but he spoke as if that was a downside, not a deal breaker. Now, it looks like something that might be able to be overcome.

A move to MLS would be a nice boost for Mix. There's no doubt that the league is better than the Tippeligaen, giving him a higher level of play and it would get him more exposure to Jurgen Klinsmann than he gets now. He'll be 27 at the 2018 World Cup so that figures to be his best chance to shine for the U.S., making the next four years crucial.

In addition to the boost from joining MLS, Mix would also get to play for Jason Kreis. If Mix, or any player for that matter, could pick any manager in the league to play for -- from a personal development and winning standpoint -- Kreis would be near the top of the list. Kreis would have no problem utlizing Mix's technicality, while also asking him to be more responsible defensively.

Of course, this is a single report and it only says that NYCFC are interested in Mix. It's not as if Mix is going to sign tomorrow (and he can't sign a pre-contract until the summer anyway), but with his contract up after the season, a MLS move makes sense and a move to New York would be a great move for the midfielder.
