Kellyn Acosta’s name was a somewhat unexpected name on Bruce Arena’s 24-man World Cup qualifying roster today. Not because he doesn’t deserve it, but because he’s never appeared for the USMNT in a meaningful match and had to depart the January camp early.
However, the 21-year-old Texas native has begun the new MLS season hotter than any player in the league. He’s done it in league play and in the CONCACAF Champions League. Tonight he added to his great form with a stunning free kick against Pachuca in the semifinal first leg.
It appears as if Acosta is emerging as the midfielder of the future for the USMNT and at this rate he could be the midfielder of the present before long. He’s always possessed the talent, but this year could be his year if he keeps doing amazing things like this. Hopefully he continues this great form into USMNT camp later this month.
