Last week, we had a detailed article on MLS expansion and the cities that were up for consideration as MLS announced its plan to expand beyond 28 teams. It instantly created a debate as to which bids would become the 28th, 29th, and 30th franchises in America’s top soccer league. Established finalists during the last round of expansion, like Sacramento, St. Louis, and Detroit, are out there, while there are other cities that now have another chance to shore up their bids in an effort to convince the MLS owners that they are the next hot city.
Of course, there are other markets that have not been considered in the past that could step up to the plate. Cities with USL Championship teams, like Louisville or Las Vegas, have aspirations for something more. In addition, there are cities that don’t have professional soccer that may want to enter the fray, like Baltimore, Milwaukee, or Buffalo. Could there be a city that’s not on the radar now that jumps to the front of the line?
