Atlanta United was able to hold off Minnesota United last night to win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. It’s the third trophy that Atlanta has been able to lift up in the past 9 months. Of course, they won MLS Cup last year at home against the Portland Timbers, and just a couple weeks ago, they beat Club América to win the Campeones Cup, an annual competition between the winners of MLS and Liga MX.
It helps bring to the forefront one of American soccer’s great debates from the past 10 years or so: which trophy is the most important? Is it MLS Cup, which is the official champion of the league? Is it the Supporters Shield, which rewards a team for being the best throughout the grueling regular season. Could it be the U.S. Open Cup, America’s oldest trophy competition? Or could be it be winning CONCACAF Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, or another trophy?
You be the judge. Hit the comments to discuss which trophies you rate as the most important and why.
