The 2020 Concacaf Champions League seems like it took an entire year...because it did. But, it ended last night when Tigres beat Los Angeles Football Club 2-1 to claim their first Champions League trophy. Once again, a MLS team fell short in the final, as LAFC joined Real Salt Lake, the Montreal Impact, and Toronto FC in getting the runners-up medals in the Champions League era. Only D.C. United and the LA Galaxy have won a Concacaf championship trophy since MLS started.
For the 2021 Concacaf Champions League, four more MLS teams get their chance to try for Champions League glory:
Columbus Crew - 2020 MLS Cup champions
Philadelphia Union - 2020 MLS Supporters’ Shield winners
Portland Timbers - 2020 MLS is Back Tournament champions
Atlanta United - 2019 U.S. Open Cup champions*
*Because the 2020 U.S. Open Cup was canceled, U.S. Soccer inexplicably granted Atlanta United the 2020 winners’ spot.
Toronto FC could become the 5th team from MLS in the competition if they can beat Forge FC in the Canadian Championship, set to take place sometime in early 2021. They will contend with 11 other teams to try and lift the trophy, including 3 Liga MX teams (Monterrey, Cruz Azul, Club América) that have previously won the Champions League.
So, the Community Corner question is: which MLS team do you think has the best shot to win the Concacaf Champions League in 2021? Or, do you think a Liga MX team will once again be crowned the victors? Hit the comments and state your case!
